Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco manufactured throat dampers in several series, and the part you need depends on the throat dimension and whether your original was cast iron or galvanized steel. The most common we see in Pasadena are the Gelco 8-inch through 13-inch round throat models and the rectangular throat dampers sized for Rumford-style fireplaces. You can safely check three things from the firebox: whether the handle moves the plate, whether the plate seats fully when closed, and whether you see rust or gaps from below. Use a flashlight, not your hand - the plate edges are sharp and the soot is acidic.

Everything else belongs to a technician. The damper sits at the top of the firebox throat, above the smoke chamber, in a space most homeowners can’t reach without a ladder inside the fireplace or on the roof. The frame is bolted into masonry and must be sealed with refractory cement to maintain the fire rating.
